Liberty Ducks Sonoma Country Poultry was founded in 1992 by Jim Reichardt, a fourth generation duck farmer, in response to chefs looking for a larger, meatier, more flavorful duck. Jim discovered a strain of Pekin Duck that had been developed in Denmark, which had just the properties the chefs wanted. He found that these ducks, "Liberty Ducks" bennefited from the more leisurely pace of growth in that it allowed them to be less stressed by too rapid growth. This allows for a market age of about 9 weeks as opposed to six weeks. Sonoma County has the perfect climate for raising ducks in this style. The combination of temperate year around climate allows the raising of the ducks on straw litter in an open environment with a minimum of intrusion. Liberty Ducks receive no antibiotics or hormones and are fed a diet that consists of mostly corn and other grains. The combination of all these factors provided for the best, most flavorful duck available in the USA today. Located in Penngrove, CA.
